What's the Gospel?
What does the Bible say?
6 Verses that sum up the Christian Faith
1) For all have sinned & fall short of the glory of God.
The Gospel says ALL have sinned (that is not given God our Creator the recognition He is due. Instead we lived our lives our own way), there are no exceptions, because God sees us as we are – he knows our hearts. [Romans 3:23]
4) ..righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.
If our wage for sin is ‘death’, Jesus’ death on the cross pays that cost on our behalf. But not only that, as he pays for the sin, our status before God changes, wiping out all our sins (past, present & future), such that God declares us ‘righteous’, that is pure! [Romans 3:31]
2) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
When we sin we earn our wages (just like earning money in a job) – but for sin the wages is death! Jesus came to cancel our debt before God – he was only able to do this because he was perfectly sinless himself. This wonderful gift of eternal life is a free gift from God, through his son Jesus. [Romans 6:23]
5) ..since we've been justified through faith, we have peace with God
God is Holy, that it is completely without sin. He hates sin so much that he cannot bear it. Even we, in our sin tend to turn away from him in our guilt & shame. But if we repent and believe the Gospel and as God declares us righteous we can enter into a relationship with him. [Romans 5:1]
3) “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent & believe the good news!”
Believers in Jesus are challenged to ‘repent’, (that is to turn their backs on sin, to stop ignoring God), and to instead embrace the great news (believe) that Jesus invites us into his kingdom if we trust in his sacrifice on our behalf. [Mark 1:15]
6) ...to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
So when we believe the good news that Jesus died to pay the wages of our sin, we can know for sure that : 1) We will share eternal life with him, 2) we will be declared righteous (holy), 3) we will be at peace with God and so can enter a relationship with Him. 4) But more than that we can call ourselves His ‘Children’ – heirs to his kingdom. [John 1:12]
